Moving an office is necessary for growth and expansion. However, it can also be a time-consuming and daunting process. Moving an office is typically much more involved than moving a home, as you have a lot of electronic and technological equipment that needs to be packed, moved and set up again in a new office. Taking the time to pre-plan a move, and create a checklist of sorts, will help you best prepare for an upcoming move, while also ensuring you have your bases covered for getting everything back up and running again.

Here are a few of the things that you will want to do prior to a move, on the day of the move, and before opening up the office in regards to your IT office setup process.

Prior to the Move

Prior to an office move, there is a lot of work to be done. You need to hire movers,Businessman showing computer screen to coworkers in creative office create a moving plan, and disconnect and set-up utilities. When it comes to computers and your IT office setup, you will need to take steps to ensure everything is backed up and stored on the cloud. This helps to ensure nothing is erased or lost when you unplug computers or servers.

You also want to have employees take pictures of their office equipment set-ups. For example, take a picture of the back of the computer so employees can see which wires or plugs connect where. This makes it easier to set up a computer or other office equipment when equipment is unpacked.

Lastly, you will need to ensure that you contact your phone provider, cloud provider and Internet provider and ensure they know you are moving. Turn off service at one location and turn it on at your new location.

On the Day of the Move

On the day of the move, there will be a lot going on. Many offices ask employees to come to the new office on moving day. As boxes are removed from the moving truck, employees can start to set-up their work stations. They can plug in things like their computer and their office telephone.

You may also want to ask your IT staff to work on this day. They will have a lot of work to do, including helping employees get their computers up and running and setting up printers.

Before Opening Up the Office

Before opening the office back up, there are a few key things you want to do and test out. First, you want to test out the Internet. You want to ensure it is working in your office. Employees cannot work without the Internet, so you want to ensure that it is up and fully functional.

Next, you may want to take the time to power up computers. It can take time for computers to power back up. Consider having your IT staff power up all computers and connect them to the Internet and the cloud before employees come in to work.

Lastly, take the time to make sure your business phone lines are working. Testing all of this out before the office opens gives you time to fix problems or get professional help if needed.
