If you look closely at your 2023 calendar, there are a lot of whimsical “national days” being celebrated this month from “National Bobblehead Day” (Jan. 7) to “National Rubber Ducky Day” (Jan. 13) to “National Fruitcake Toss Day” (Jan. 21).

While we can live in a (less fun!) world without bobbleheads and rubber ducky’s – and tossing your fruitcake sounds a bit dangerous if it’s hardened over the holidays – there is one day we are celebrating this month that we truly cannot live without: National Technology Day on Jan. 6.

Global real estate service firm Cushman & Wakefield updated their “Office of the Future” white paper, highlighting three new realities shaping hybrid workplace strategies.

“Since our publication of “Workplace Ecosystems of the Future” in early 2021, much of the world finds itself in a different place relative to the global pandemic,” says the authors of “Office of the Future Revisited”. “Variants continue to impact communities—certainly no one has declared victory. Still, in many locations, life looks and feels closer to life before 2020.”

Business communications systems have come a long way from the days when your grandfather picked up his office extension and a live operator on the other end efficiently asked, “number, please.”

One thing, however, has not changed on the digital dizzying ride from “Ma Bell” to the Metaverse, and that is that your business communications system still needs a human touch.

The pace of digital transformation sparked by the COVID-19 pandemic shows no signs of slowing and if anything is accelerating as businesses struggle to remain relevant in trying times.

“Now more than ever, businesses around the world recognize the value of IT to their company’s strategy and operations. The pace of digital transformation continues to accelerate, making it even more challenging and complex for IT to operate and modernize at the same time,” writes Dell Digital CIO and Chief Digital Officer Jen Felch for Forbes.

Tech audits have always been important because historically many companies play “catch up” with technology trends, adding hardware, software, and other infrastructure on the fly or in a manner that adds layers of sometimes incohesive elements.

As a result, some of your tech and tech stack over the years can become obsolete, redundant, and/or no longer a productive asset working towards your company’s goals. Even worse, without a firm grasp on your technology and data you work with, your company may be left open to cyberattacks and non-compliance issues.

There is no greater sign that a brand or product has become an indispensable part of culture than when their proper noun name turns into a verb. Don’t believe it? Go ahead and “Google” it … or do an internet search, which is what “to Google” has become synonymous for.

Joining Google, Uber, PhotoShop and other nouns that have slipped into everyday speech as verbs is Zoom, the cloud-based video conferencing application that not only facilitates virtual meetings, calls and chats.
