Technology has the power to render once ubiquitous devices into the curio cabinet of the forgotten (think VCRs, pagers, or fax machines) or it can enhance everyday things to an entirely new level like smartphones, smart cars, and smart televisions.

While those smartphones are responsible for banishing landlines from many homes – more than 90 percent of U.S. adults lived in households that had operational landline phones in 2004, and 20 years later that number is under 30 percent – they haven’t laid a glove on business phone systems which are alive and well.

In today’s increasingly digital-first world, emerging 5G technology and its faster speeds, lower latency, and expanded connectivity promises to become an essential component in how we live, work, and play.

“5G is set to be available in almost every part of the world in the next two years, and many people, especially IT professionals, have high expectations regarding its performance. Individuals are also eager to learn about its capabilities and how it differs from previous networks,” wrote Devin Partida in TechRepublic. “Many service providers are already rolling out 5G across countries like the U.S., U.K., and China.”

Artificial Intelligence (AI), technology that allows computers and robots to "think" and make decisions beyond their programming, is much more than just a fad. This technology will displace more than 500,000 jobs in the next two years, according to Forbes magazine, and a recent McKinsey & Company study found that more than half of today's jobs will be redundant by 2055. There are few places where this is more apparent than in the IT industry. AI is clearly changing the landscape of IT departments around the globe. However, while AI may be responsible for shifting workers, it is also opening opportunities for those in the IT industry.
